The new South Beach Harbor Master Building was commissioned by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency in 2002 and was opened in late 2006. Located along the Embarcadero between Pier 40 and AT&T Park, the 11,000 sf building houses the Harbor Master’s offices, the South Beach Yacht Club, a community center, and marina services. The South Beach Harbor consists of 700 slips with concrete docks and a 640 recreational and commercial Guest Dock.
The design challenge was to create an identity in built form to reflect the character of the harbor that includes multi-purpose requirements. Due to the nature of the site’s visibility, all four building facades have unique ways of dealing with the context. The south facade is articulated with wood slate for thermal performance requirements while transparency is key along the north facade. This project was executed with Tom Eliot Fisch and EDAW.
